Silica gel was discovered by accident in late 1952 by the United States government during the operation Ivy series of hydrogen bomb tests. There were in fact three tests, not two as is generally believed. Ivy Bob, the first and lesser known test of the three, was detonated on October 2nd as the first "successful" test of a hydrogen bomb.
